Graduate Studies

Curriculum

Graduate students are required to take 12.5 courses over two years before their doctoral qualifying exams.

These include:

  • Theory and Methods
  • Proseminar in American History
  • Proseminar in Transnational History
  • Research Seminar I
  • Research Seminar II
  • At Least Three out of Five Thematic Cluster Courses:
    • Culture and Power
    • Women, Gender, and the Family
    • Technology, Environment, Science, Medicine
    • Labor, Politics, and Social Movements
    • African, African American, and African Diaspora
  • 4 Electives
  • Mini Course in Teaching

Time Table

Students are expected to finish their course work in two years, take their doctoral qualifying exams and complete their prospectus in the third year, do their research in the fourth year, begin writing up the results of their research in the fifth year, and finish the dissertation by the end of the sixth year.
