Dr. Marie Norman serves as Director of Intercultural Education at iCarnegie Global Learning and teaches anthropology in the Department of History on an adjunct basis. She received her Ph.D. from the University of Pittsburgh’s Department of Anthropology, where she conducted doctoral research on tourism and caste relations in Nepal on a Fulbright fellowship. Dr. Norman teaches a number of undergraduate anthropology courses through the Department of History (e.g., Medical Anthropology, Dilemmas and Controversies in Anthropology). In addition, she co-edits the journal, Ethnology. Dr. Norman is particularly interested in applying anthropological theories and methods to practical problems in education, medicine, and design. Her current work focuses on cultural variations in teaching styles and classroom norms, their effect on teaching and learning, and the development of methods to bridge cultural differences in the context of international education. Norman has also conducted applied ethnographic research for St. Margaret’s Hospital, Allegheny College, the Eberly Center for Teaching Excellence (CMU), and Fathom Design.
