Biography

Dr. Marie Norman serves as Associate Director of the Eberly Center for Teaching Excellence and Adjunct Professor in the Department of History. She received her Ph.D. from the University of Pittsburgh’s Department of Anthropology, where she conducted doctoral research on tourism and caste relations in Nepal, funded by a D.O.E. Fulbright fellowship. Dr. Norman’s primary appointment is with the Eberly Center, but she also teaches a number of undergraduate anthropology courses through the Department of History (e.g., Medical Anthropology, Dilemmas and Controversies in Anthropology). In addition, she serves as an academic advisor for the Bachelor of Humanities and Arts Program and co-edits the journal, Ethnology. Dr. Norman is particularly interested in applying anthropological theories and methods to practical problems in education, medicine, and design. She has conducted applied ethnographic research for St. Margaret’s Hospital, Allegheny College, the Eberly Center, and Fathom Design. At the Eberly Center, Dr. Norman consults individually with faculty about their teaching, and regularly conducts seminars about teaching and learning to faculty, including at the Qatar and Adelaide campuses. She has been involved with a number of research projects, including studies of faculty satisfaction and retention, undergraduate student experience, and the impact of various educational technologies on teaching and learning. She is closely involved with Carnegie Mellon’s Open Learning Initiative and also the Global Working Group. She is especially interested in cultural issues in the classroom and issues concerning international students and faculty.
